Secret Garden Vibes Family Pictures near South Bend, Indiana
This location has been on my radar for a few years! As luck would have it, I was at my son’s baseball tournament two miles away when Amber and I were trying to figure out where she wanted to take her family pictures. Since we have been everywhere else together (thank you, amazing clients!), I snuck over during warm ups to check out the garden I’d heard so much about from all my other South Bend photographers! Check out this gorgeousness.
Defries Garden
DeFries Garden was originally a large homestead. This absolute gem of a park is stunning. It’s garden buildings, nooks and crannies, and architecture are the perfect backdrop for the lifestyle family photography I love to create.
This location would be great for your family if you like a manicured look. The garden’s path has plantings for each of the 365 days of the year. It’s really unique! The garden is laid out beautifully, with brick, water features, and the 4 main buildings including the cutest greenhouse. The structure provides a nice contrast to some of the other area favorites that are just basically fields! I love how the structures provide things to lean against, sit on and walk through. I think portraits here feel a little more relaxed because of that.
It’s also a great location for those that don’t want to hike all over the place for your photos. The property itself is large, but the garden is very walkable for even these four little friends. Lots of bang for your buck in a small square footage at this gem!
There are more gardens, the house and its brick drive and patios, huge mature trees and an even a nice bathroom. Also a plus with littles! This place is truly wonderful!
Details I’m Loving
I could have shot at this amazing location for hours and hours, but my subject matter (4 under 4) dictated a tighter schedule. Haha! Arms full of babies at the most swoony place ever.. it was a good day at work on a beautiful Sunday night! I love the shot of dad holding all his babies. We keep adding a kid every time we see each other, but he keeps figuring out how to make that photo happen!
I also can’t help mentioning the mini film! A few clients take advantage of adding this on, and it always gives me a little thrill. I love family videography work, people!

DeFries Garden in New Paris, Indiana is worth the 30 minute drive from the south side of South Bend. It’s a new favorite, with gorgeous textures, manicured sections, wild sections, cutie little buildings that give secret garden vibes and provide amazing focal points. It’s just the best!
